STEP 1:
Know the problem you're confronting and who you want to write a letter to. If you want to write a letter, you have to know the problem you want to address. Is it to stop puppy mills... trophy hunting... wildlife killing contests... a nearby coal powerplant.
The picture below is of an example situation of what a write a letter about. The letter example has nothing to do with the environment.
Step 2:
If you want to write a letter, you must research what you want to write. If you want change, you need to have evidence on why that change is good.
While researching, make sure you use good sites. For example, Britannica, National Geographic, Humane Society, and any '.gov' (though note that '.gov' sites are sometimes biased to a certain political party so you'll need to find multiple so you'll get good information.
While researching, you might find yourself wanting to switch letter topics. That's okay and normal!
Step 3:
Begin writing your letter. While writing, you might find yourself continue to research some more. Be sure to include your information sources in your letter! You can handwrite your letter, but typing is recommended because it's easier to put links to your information sites.
Step 4:
Edit your letter! You can find someone to help you edit your letter to get a fresh pair of eyes on it. Things that you should look for in editing:
1. Keep it respectful and formal
2. Don't use run-ons
3. Make sure it's persuasive
4. Say only true information.
5. Check grammar and spelling
Though editing might seem boring, it's a crucial part to writing your letter.
Repeat Steps 3 & 4
Write and edit. Write and edit. Write and edit.
Step 5:
Finalize your letter. (NOTE: don't add pictures of smiley-faced pencils. It's just inserted to make this article more interesting).
Step 6
Send your letter and wait for a response. If someone doesn't respond immediately, give them some time. They might be busy. If you don't get a response in more than a month, find another person you can send the letter to.
